"Love Divine All Loves Excelling" is perhaps Charles Wesley's most well known hymn, appearing almost universally across denominational and church lines. Congregationally sung at Kate Middleton and Prince William's royal wedding, it uses the Welsh hymn setting "Blaenwern".
It seems this hymn more than perhaps any other has seen a vast multitude of lyric variations over the years, due primarily to Wesley's belief in a Perfectionist theology - that Christian's have the possibility to be completely sinless in this life. Because this is at odds with most of Christendom - indeed, with most theologians of his time and even his brother John, the second verse is sometimes omitted, and the other verses have seen almost countless word and phrase alterations.
