Meditation From Thais (Massanet) is here performed as a piano solo by Steve Millikan over a gentle background of soft strings and orchestral harp, with a touch of french horn. Almost always performed as a violin solo, the beauty of Massanet's melody makes a wonderfully moving piano solo as well. Thais is an opera Massanet composed in the late 1800's , and has been a favorite encore piece for world-class violinists for decades. Massanet may have intended the piece to have religious overtones, as the tempo marking is Andante Religioso; the context of the opera informs this idea as well. This hauntingly beautiful piece was to be played between movements of the opera.
