    SIMPLE GIFTS (CELEBRATION) ('Tis a gift to be simple) is a Shaker song; though sometimes played at a slow or moderate pace, originally it was intended to be dance tune! With solo instruments that include Irish whistle and piccolo, and accompaniment that features acoustic guitar, mandolin, a small string section, and various percussion instruments, Simple Gifts here has the flavor of a Celtic wedding celebration song. Thus, our arrangement is more toward celebration and less toward reflection. Simple Gifts makes an appearance later on this same hymns album as a more reflective piece.

SIMPLE GIFTS (CELEBRATION): The term "turning" in the lyric was originally a dance instruction for this tune that was popularized by Copland's inclusion of it in Appalachian Spring. The melody range in Simple Gifts is quite small, and so lends itself to performance by children and learners on a variety of instruments with limited range, & it is thus ideal for performance in small home groups and recitals for young children ( and adults who are not too old to be learning an instrument!)
