PACHELBEL CANONI IN D - Pachelbel's masterpiece is perhaps the most popular wedding song of the last 30 years. Often chosen for the brides or bridesmaids music, it is wonderful as a wedding prelude piece as well, and has been performed in a great variety of styles on various solo instruments and ensembles. Canon in D was essentially lost and unheard from the time of it's composition in the late 1600's until the 20th century.
It is possible that Pachelbel's Canon in D was composed for the wedding of Johann Christoph Bach, the oldest brother of the more famous J.S. Bach, who has himself given us numerous pieces fit for a wedding day, including Air on a G string and Prelude in C, the musical backbone of the Ave Maria attributed to Gounod and Bach. Interestingly, Johann Christoph Bach was a pupil of Johann Pachelbel.
