Simple Gifts (Ceremony)

SIMPLE GIFTS is a Shaker song composed by Elder Joseph Brackett, and was originally written as a dance tune, as evidenced by use of the term "turn" in the lyrics. The SIMPLE GIFTS Celebration song earlier in the album sequence is a more lively dance-like tune, while this version of the Simple Gifts is more reflective in nature, featuring Tobin Wingard on flute, with some gentle solo cello lines, and a string ensemble joining on the last verse.

SIMPLE GIFTS was popularized in the mid 20th century by Aaron Copland's inclusion of the piece in Appalachian Spring.

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be
And when we find ourselves in the place just right
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight!

When true simplicity is gained
To bow and bend we shan't be ashamed
To turn... turn.... will be our delight
Till by turning, turning we come 'round right!
