in 1848 elder Joseph Brackett wrote "Simple Gifts", a Shaker song. Not a hymn, as some suppose, it was actually composed as a dance tune. It was largely unknown until Copland's inclusion of it in his "Appalachian Spring", and later in his collection "Old American Songs." The Ingalls family sang it in Little House On The Prairie episodes.
