The Swan was composed by Camille Saint-Saens as part of his larger work Carnival Of The Animals. Feeling the rest of this creation was a bit frivolous, and perhaps beneath his dignity, and because he was afraid the other pieces might damage his musical reputation, he refused to allow the other pieces to be played publicly during his lifetime!
in 1905, the lovely Ana Pavlova composed choreography inspired by swans she had observed in parks, and her creation is still commonly performed today.
