The Hornpipe from Handel’s Water Music is a most familiar wedding song, ideal as prelude, processional, or recessional. The Hornpipe is a traditional English dance, originating, it is thought, on English ships in the 16th century. This traditional wedding song is also known as “Alla Hornpipe.”
The premier of this composition was on the water, performed for King George I in 1717 (on July 17 if you’re counting). The king was seated on the royal barge as he listened to the world’s first public performance of Handel’s creation, and was so enthralled he requested the musicians play the various movements of Water Music three times during the ‘concert’. There is a legend that Handel was seeking to regain favour with the king with this piece.
